POSITION OVERVIEW
Under close supervision, the Recycling Material Sorter is responsible for sorting various reusable waste materials for recycling according to established standards and procedures, ensuring that contaminated or non-recyclable items are properly separated. This role is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals with the necessary knowledge but no prior experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Sorting mixed recyclable materials by type and from waste in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
- Identifying and distinguishing recyclables (such as paper and glass) from non-recyclables (like garbage), including inspecting materials on a conveyor and opening bags to check contents.
- Emptying and/or changing containers for sorted materials as necessary.
- Maintaining a safe working environment.
- Following company policies and training to identify, report, and take appropriate action regarding hazardous materials in the waste stream.
- Adhering to company policies and local regulations.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable. A typical qualification includes:
- Understanding of job site safety principles, potential hazards, and relevant regulations.
- Familiarity with common procedures and general company operations, following established methods and instructions.
- Basic knowledge of computer programs.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Ability to promote the WASTE ZERO philosophy by maximizing resource use.
- Capability to work under pressure, manage stressful situations, and maintain adaptability.
- Ability to sustain high levels of productivity and effectiveness over extended periods.
- Understanding of safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Commitment to building knowledge and expertise in the current role.
- Effective communication skills with peers, supervisors, and customers.
- Ability to communicate using two-way radios or similar devices.
- Capacity to lift 25 lbs.
