POSITION OVERVIEW

The Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant (RTA) plays a crucial role in assisting licensed Physical Therapists in delivering effective rehabilitation treatments aimed at helping patients recover mobility and alleviate discomfort. The RTA may, in compliance with state regulations, support the formulation of treatment strategies, execute routine tasks, document patient progress, and adjust specific therapies based on patient needs, all while adhering to the treatment protocols established by the supervising physical therapist. Additionally, the RTA is expected to foster a collaborative environment with other healthcare professionals and support staff. The primary objective is to achieve or surpass established productivity benchmarks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Duties:

  • Guides, encourages, and ensures the safety of patients during their exercise routines or functional tasks. Monitors patients throughout their treatments to gather and assess data regarding their responses and progress, relaying findings to the physical therapist through direct communication or written reports.
  • Collaborates with physical therapy personnel and other stakeholders to review and assess patient information for the purpose of planning, adjusting, and coordinating treatment approaches. Provides instruction to caregivers and family members regarding patient therapeutic activities and care plans.
  • Assists in transporting patients to and from therapy areas, ensuring proper lifting and transferring techniques are employed. Secures patients appropriately on therapy apparatus.
  • Administers both active and passive therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, aquatic therapy, and various modality treatments including ultrasound, heat, light, and sound therapies.
  • Evaluates patients' range of motion, body measurements, and vital signs to assess treatment effects or for evaluation purposes.
  • Monitors the functionality of therapeutic equipment and accurately records the usage and administration of treatments.
  • Fits patients with orthopedic supports, prosthetic devices, and mobility aids such as crutches.
  • Conducts therapy practices in alignment with established care standards, maintaining professional and ethical conduct.
  • Effectively communicates with other healthcare professionals and support staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Adheres to facility and departmental policies, objectives, quality improvement initiatives, safety protocols, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains timely and accurate documentation of patient care.
  • Engages in professional development through educational opportunities, in-service training, and workshops, while staying informed on current professional literature.
  • Possesses and applies a thorough understanding of various funding sources and requirements to ensure service reimbursement.
  • Travels between facilities as necessary to deliver patient care.
  • Provides in-person or telehealth services as deemed appropriate.
  • Follows infection control policies and practices as mandated by MJ Care and the assigned facility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Background:

  • Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program.
  • Current state licensure and/or certification to practice as a physical therapist assistant in good standing.
  • Valid National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Professional Experience:

  • Preferred experience of 1+ year in a related field.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, with the ability to effectively utilize electronic medical records systems.
  • Strong communication abilities, including active listening and the capacity to learn.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, time management, and mathematical skills.

ACCESS TO PATIENT INFORMATION

Ensures the protection of Personal Health Information specific to assigned patients for purposes of screenings, consultations, evaluations, and related healthcare operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this role, the associate is frequently required to communicate verbally and audibly; stand and walk; bend or kneel; squat, balance, and crawl; reach overhead; push, pull, or twist up to 100 lbs; navigate stairs; lift or carry up to 100 lbs, and occasionally more. Specific vision capabilities required include the ability to read documents and observe the work environment. Hearing abilities must include the capacity to hear in moderately loud environments. The role involves exposure to biohazards (e.g., bloodborne pathogens) and may require working in confined spaces with equipment that may not be suitable for individuals with pacemakers. Use of protective equipment, including gowns, gloves, and face protection, is mandatory.
