Casual RN Position
Position OverviewDelivers expert nursing care to hospice patients and their families outside of standard office hours. Available during these periods to address issues faced by hospice patients and their caregivers. Conducts home visits when necessary for urgent situations and end-of-life care. Applies principles of palliative care and hospice philosophy to offer comprehensive support.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for gathering up-to-date patient information and physician directives by collaborating with the Hospice Registered Nurse and designated Supervisors.
- Available via pager or phone at all times while on duty, ensuring prompt response to communications within 15 minutes.
- Provides nursing care to patients and support to caregivers, adhering to the care plan and palliative guidelines as feasible.
- When necessary, communicates with the attending physician and/or obtains new medication orders; assesses the need for skilled nursing via phone.
- Conducts home visits as required when: family members are distressed and cannot be calmed over the phone, skilled nursing interventions are needed, a patient is newly admitted to hospice service and requires additional education and support, significant changes in the patient's physical condition occur, or a patient has passed away.
- Available for scheduled calls, daily visits to general inpatient and respite hospitalized patients, or provides continuous care as assigned.
- Reports any administratively complex situations to the Clinical Manager, Director of Clinical Services, or designee.
- Reports any clinically complex situations to the Medical Director.
- Casual RN will be available (as scheduled) to provide phone coverage, home visits, scheduled visits, and death visits on an as-needed basis.
- Documents all calls and home visits in accordance with established protocols. Maintains documentation of time sheets, mileage, and other records as required.
- Reports any patient concerns to the Hospice Registered Nurse, Clinical Manager, or Director of Clinical Services to ensure appropriate continuity of care.
- Performs case management duties as needed and may occasionally process referrals, intakes, and admissions.
Qualifications & Skills
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in planning and delivering quality hospice nursing care.
- Capability to provide unsupervised healthcare services in private residences, as well as to manage and administer controlled and prescribed medications.
- Ability to identify and address the psychosocial needs of patients and caregivers.
- Excellent critical thinking and assessment skills are essential.
- Educational and experiential qualifications to meet the needs of patients and caregivers, adhering to regulations established by State and Federal law.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid nursing license.
- Current CPR Certification is required.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Graduate of a RN Nursing Curriculum; BSN preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a healthcare organization with similar patient care scenarios.
Work Hours
- Scheduled coverage will be arranged in advance, based on the agency's needs.
- On-call hours commence at 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on weekdays; weekend on-call is from 4:30 p.m. Friday through 8:00 a.m. Monday; includes holidays.
Compensation$42.00 per hour
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on various factors including experience, education, geography, and other relevant considerations.
