Under the supervision of the MLA Coordinator, the designated Operations Coordinator, and the Support Services Manager, Laboratory Support Specialists provide a range of essential services to the laboratory.

The specific responsibilities may vary depending on the assigned area during each shift. Below are the outlined duties for the workstations that a Laboratory Support Specialist may be assigned to.

Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Procedures and Protocols

  • Adhere to established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Process various specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  • Conduct data entry into both hospital and laboratory information systems.
  • Oversee the pneumatic tube system and ensure the timely processing of all specimens received through it.
  • Handle add-on requests from client offices and nursing units.
  • Monitor requests for laboratory testing that have not been processed through the laboratory information system.
  • Ensure all outstanding orders are accounted for and that any missing specimens are located.
  • Document the receipt of specimens in the laboratory information system.
  • Print and fax patient reports as requested.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on outpatient requisitions to verify the accuracy of data entry.
  • Sort and file requisitions in the appropriate location according to established protocols.
  • Retrieve all outpatient requisitions that require follow-up with physician offices in the morning.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked work area.
  • Rotate into weekend and holiday shifts as assigned to ensure consistent quality of laboratory services.
  • Communicate effectively with medical, nursing, and office personnel regarding laboratory results and protocols.
  • Provide backup support for all areas of responsibility for a Laboratory Support Specialist, regardless of individual assignment.
  • Perform other related duties as required or as responsibilities dictate.

Personal and Professional Development:

  • Exhibit the role of a laboratory support specialist in a professional manner.

  • Report for work punctually and provide adequate notice of absenteeism or tardiness.

Qualifications:

Requires intense attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple processes simultaneously. Must be capable of interacting with a diverse range of personalities. Basic computer skills can be acquired through on-the-job training.

Preferred:
High school diploma or GED is preferred.
