Job Title: Staff Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Staff Nurse to join our team at the University of Iowa's Donor Center. As a key member of our blood and platelet collections team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient collection of blood products for patients in need.

Job Summary:

The Staff Nurse will be responsible for screening prospective blood donors, performing physical examinations, and collecting donor samples. You will also be responsible for drawing blood units, performing phlebotomy, and supervising designated collection staff as directed.

Responsibilities:
  • Screen prospective whole blood and apheresis donors and perform physical examinations using standard interview forms and/or donor computer software.
  • Obtain donor samples for determination of laboratory values and draw pretest, retest, and other blood samples as assigned.
  • Perform phlebotomy, drawing whole blood units, and may participate in off-site blood collection.
  • Perform record keeping and data collection using manual and computer methods.
  • Perform blood component harvesting utilizing cell separators.
  • Supervise designated collection staff as directed.
Requirements:
  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader, or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with blood donors, patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills are required.
  • Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years acute care nursing experience.
  • Previous experience using electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in a blood donor or apheresis center.
  • Experience using highly specialized medical equipment.
