Job Summary:

The Retail Associate plays a vital role in assisting customers with their donations, selections, and purchases of store merchandise. This position involves addressing customer inquiries, maintaining a tidy and organized store environment, and ensuring the security of all merchandise. Responsibilities include receiving, sorting, pricing, and preparing donated goods for display, while adhering to established standards for item suitability and pricing. The Retail Associate is also responsible for keeping the store and sorting areas orderly and clean, as well as providing assistance to customers throughout their shopping experience.

Essential Functions:

This job description is not exhaustive and may be subject to modifications. The incumbent may be required to perform additional job-related tasks as necessary.

Customer Service (60%):

- Provide assistance to customers by clarifying store policies and addressing inquiries regarding pricing and purchases.
- Ensure a pleasant shopping experience for all customers.
- Aid customers in donating items by directing them to appropriate areas and assisting with the transportation of donations.
- Prepare and issue tax receipts as required.
- Maintain the checkout area’s cleanliness and security, ensuring necessary supplies are stocked.
- Answer store phone calls courteously, assisting customers with inquiries and providing general information.

Store Orderliness and Cleanliness (20%):

- Organize and arrange merchandise as directed, ensuring displays are neat and orderly.
- Regularly clean display racks, shelves, and floors to maintain an inviting atmosphere.
- Rotate stock and return items to their designated locations after customer handling.

Sorting Room Responsibilities (20%):

- Receive, inspect, sort, and price donated items according to category and condition.
- Select suitable items for display and distribute them to appropriate areas for further processing.
- Discard items that do not meet established criteria.
- Tag items with appropriate pricing and prepare them for display.
- Assist in transporting items to storage or display areas as needed.

Other Responsibilities:

- Inspect donated items to ensure they meet usage standards.
- Assist in pricing and tagging items in accordance with established procedures.
- Help customers carry their purchased or donated items in and out of the store.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

- High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred, with experience in a retail environment.
- Equivalent combinations of training and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Proficient in effective customer service techniques.
- Understanding of basic mathematical principles.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Capacity to present a positive image of The Salvation Army.
- Competence in preparing and maintaining accurate reports.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attendance record.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
- Ability to operate a cash register and perform basic mathematical computations.
- Capability to engage in physical activities such as walking, standing, and lifting.

Working Conditions:

- Duties are primarily performed while standing, with occasional sitting.
- Moderate physical effort is required, including lifting and carrying items up to 75 lbs.
- Work may occur in both store and warehouse environments, with exposure to varying conditions.
