The Lead Underground Utility Engineer will oversee a diverse range of underground utility transmission and distribution projects, focusing on voltages from 2.4kV to 345kV. This role involves collaborating with a project team to devise innovative and effective solutions tailored to budgetary constraints, design specifications, and client requirements. Interaction with utility clients and cooperation across multiple offices will be essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct design teams comprising 2 to 10 engineers and designers, ensuring close collaboration with construction, procurement, and permitting teams to successfully execute underground transmission and distribution projects.
- Engage with local and national leadership to cultivate new client relationships while maintaining existing partnerships.
- Assist in business development initiatives targeting new clients throughout North America.
- Contribute to thought leadership through participation in conferences, marketing efforts, and other internal initiatives.
- Prepare and develop construction packages for underground projects, including manhole and equipment installation, conduit and duct bank design, feeder and cable replacement, and new feeder design.
- Conduct routing analysis for the design of low to high voltage distribution and transmission lines utilizing CADD/GIS design and mapping software.
- Assess construction feasibility through route studies, conflict analysis, and cost estimation.
- Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
- Utilize commercially available simulation software and other tools to evaluate various scenarios and provide informed recommendations to clients.
- Create reports and visualizations to effectively communicate technical results and interpret trends; present findings and recommendations to all business areas.
- Collaborate closely with the project team to ensure deliverables meet client satisfaction.
- Ensure adherence to internal QA/QC guidelines throughout project execution.
- Conduct QA/QC reviews of studies, reports, and construction design packages.
- Prepare calculations and assist with equipment specifications, including cable pulling calculations, voltage drop, and pole loading.
- Draft proposals, engineering/project cost estimates, and execution schedules.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.
- Maintain regular communication with clients, subcontractors, and external personnel.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master of Science degree in Engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in underground distribution and/or transmission civil engineering/design.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods and electrical system equipment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in conducting underground field inspections.
- Understanding of power flow dynamics.
- Proficiency with various underground design tools, as well as CADD and GIS for design support.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D is advantageous.
- Knowledge of topographic mapping & surveying, and subsurface utility engineering/utility locating practices.
- Understanding of easements, right-of-way, and permitting processes.
- Familiarity with NESC code for electrical design and construction guidelines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Capable of developing innovative and efficient solutions to challenges and processes.
- Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
The compensation range for this position is competitive and reflects the skills and experience of the candidate. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
