Roadway Maintenance Specialist

We are seeking experienced transportation workers to join our Duplin County Maintenance team. As a Transportation Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads.
- Operate 2+ pieces of equipment, including backhoes, tandem dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, forklifts, force feed loaders, asphalt distributors, asphalt patch/crack sealing machines, track excavators, skid steers, or sweepers.
- Install traffic & erosion control devices.
- Clear right of ways.
- Perform roadway grading and machining unpaved roads.
- Perform pavement repair, pipe installations, or other drainage tasks.
- Inspect contract work and monitor manual tasks performed.
- Respond to emergencies, including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies.
- Train and operate equipment associated with a more senior position.
- Experience performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks and act on verbal and written communications.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures, work zone safety, and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.
- Experience operating 2+ pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.
- Experience in 1+ of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Snow and ice removal operations experience.
- Working knowledge of the principles involved in equipment operation.
- Ability to operate chain saws, shovel, drive trucks, and clean up litter.
- Strength to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Agility to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperatures.
- You can perform manual labor for extended periods and operate vibrating equipment. Ability to safely use and care for assigned equipment, hand, & power tools.
- Ability to perform manual maintenance duties.
- Ability to safely operate Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL)- required equipment/trucks with manual and automatic transmissions.
- This position is subject to emergency call backs and scheduled night work during bad weather or other extreme circumstances.
- We may require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- We will conduct a pre-employment drug test and a background check of your previous employers for the past 3 years for drug/alcohol abuse.
