Key Responsibilities:
1. Execute all personal care tasks as outlined in a care plan developed by a licensed healthcare professional. These tasks include:
a. Supporting the patient with personal hygiene using safe and appropriate methods, including bed baths, sponge baths, and hair care.
b. Aiding the patient in mobility and physical transfers, ensuring safe techniques are followed.
c. Assisting the patient during mealtimes.
d. Helping the patient with dressing and grooming.
e. Providing assistance with shaving.
2. Ensure a clean, safe, and healthy living environment, which may involve light housekeeping duties such as tidying up bathrooms and living areas, washing dishes, and managing laundry.
3. Document personal care activities accurately.
4. Monitor and report any noticeable changes in the patient's condition to the supervising nurse.
5. Oversee the self-administration of medication, which includes ensuring the patient has the correct medication and reminding them of their schedule.
6. Provide necessary support for self-administered medication, including preparing items like drinks and assisting with the medication process.
7. Assist with elimination tasks, including:
i. Toileting
ii. Using bedpans and urinals
iii. Providing care for urinary catheters
iv. Collecting specimens
v. Managing ostomy bags
Exclusions:
The Home Health Aide is not permitted to perform the following tasks:
a. Change sterile dressings.
b. Administer enemas or perform gastric irrigation.
c. Catheterize patients.
d. Administer medications.
e. Provide care for tracheostomy tubes.
Physical Requirements:
1. Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
2. Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
3. Capable of assisting patients who may weigh up to 160 pounds.
4. Must be able to stand and move for the majority of the workday.
5. Able to perform physical tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, bending, and squatting.
Mental Requirements:
1. Ability to focus on details amidst frequent interruptions.
2. Capacity to remember and follow daily routines.
3. Comprehension of professional educational materials.
4. Ability to manage the mental and emotional demands of the role.
