Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Traveling School Nurse Specialist to join our team at the Alabama Department of Education.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide health services to students within the school system, adhering to the accepted Standards of School Nursing Practice as published by the American Nurses Association and the National Association of School Nurses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver direct student/patient care, including first aid, administering medication, performing invasive procedures, and providing independent nursing judgment or intervention.
  • Conduct health appraisals of students, making necessary referrals in areas such as vision, hearing, dental, physical disability, and scoliosis, according to health services policies and procedures.
  • Utilize aseptic techniques when preparing medications and administer medication according to policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Screen students for head lice and instruct parents on correct treatment.
  • Gather information on students' past and present health history and enter it into an electronic patient history record.
  • Create health care plans and emergency care plans for students, reviewing them annually.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and materials for the school health clinic, monitoring medication expiration dates.
  • Safeguard school health supplies and materials while providing health reports to supervisors, the Board of Education, the health department, and the State Department of Education.
  • Offer resources to school personnel on health and safety issues and training for medication assistants.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and privacy of students' health information.
Requirements
  • Possess a valid current license to practice nursing in the State of Alabama.
  • Hold a degree from an accredited school of nursing approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Be certified in CPR.
Compensation and Benefits

The estimated salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
