Job Summary

The Architect of the Capitol is seeking a skilled Painter Leader to join our team. As a key member of our Painting Branch, you will be responsible for leading a team of journey-level painters, decorators, and refinishers in performing routine and decorative painting, refinishing work, and ensuring proper work methods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team members, ensuring they have the necessary instructions, materials, and tools to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulations, including OSHA guidelines.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, job orders, and specification sheets to make accurate calculations and adjustments for decorative striping, colors, refinishing, and other tasks.
  • Provide advice and guidance to customers and team members on painting techniques, materials, and best practices.
  • Maintain daily contact with site-based customers to ensure safe working conditions and resolve any issues that may arise.
  • Perform surface preparation tasks, including scraping, sanding, and applying paint remover to remove old paint and wallpaper.
  • Apply paint, varnish, and other finishes to walls, doors, windows, baseboards, floors, and other surfaces using brushes, spray guns, rollers, and other equipment.
  • Match and mix colors by eye and/or with a tinting machine to match historical and faded colors.
  • Refinish and/or finish new walnut and mahogany doors, cabinets, and other woodwork to match historical natural wood finishes.
Requirements
  • Ability to lead a team of journey-level workers in performing routine and decorative painting, refinishing work, and proper work methods.
  • Strong knowledge of painting techniques, materials, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, job orders, and specification sheets.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Working Conditions

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Tenant Services Division, Painting Branch. The individual selected for this position will work a tour of duty that includes Sunday-Thursday, 9:30 pm - 6:00 am (Hours may change due to operational needs). This position is emergency essential, and the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations.
