Job Summary

The Product Development Engineer applies scientific and engineering principles for research programs involving product development, processing, manufacturing technology, quality control, and packaging. The position manages projects by maintaining constant communication with cross-functional groups to drive projects from concept through commercialization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct basic research identifying novel delivery forms for confections, dietary supplements, and pharmaceutical active ingredients.
  • Conceptualize and develop new product prototypes at the bench.
  • Manage project timing, milestones, and resources between Operations, Quality Assurance (QA), Purchasing, and Marketing (project management).
  • Conduct plant trials and product start-ups, managing timing and resources between Operations, QA, Purchasing, and Marketing.
  • Craft and maintain documentation to ensure the consistent manufacture of new products, including batch records, production instructions, validation, and stability protocols.
  • Prepare technical reports for submission to management and diligently document all laboratory and experimental activities within a lab notebook or project binder.
  • Keep abreast on ingredients and technologies in areas of flavor, color, texture, and nutrition through literature reviews; technical meetings and seminars; and through professional contacts.
  • Develop new and improved methods and systems for food processing, production, quality control, packaging, and distribution.
  • Study methods to improve the quality of foods such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological composition of foods.
  • Confer with process engineers, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems and create new ideas.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in food science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
  • 3 years' experience in product development or food science engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience formulating and commercializing dietary supplements and/or drug products.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software (i.e., SAP, etc.), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (i.e., Workfront, Agile, etc.), and/or statistical software (Minitab, Statgraphics, etc.) with the ability to interpret data.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP requirements.
  • Experience with regulatory bodies including FDA and NSF.
