Emergency Department Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Emergency Department Technician to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a key member of our emergency department, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and families.
Key Responsibilities- Observe and report patient concerns and changes in condition to registered nurses immediately.
- Assist registered nurses with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care duties.
- Record vital signs, assist with personal hygiene, and provide other patient comfort measures.
- Assist with specimen collection and other activities related to patient care.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety.
- Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
- Communicate with registered nurses regarding nutrition issues and other patient concerns.
- Assist with administrative tasks to support department operations.
- Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
- Perform assigned tests, such as glucose monitoring, urine and stool testing, and maintain quality control testing and logs according to department policy.
- Perform routine discontinuation of IV catheters and assist with care of drainage devices.
- Transport specimens to the lab as needed and collect blood samples as per physician order.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
- Two years of college in an applicable course of study (nursing, biology, physical therapy, or sports medicine) or two years of experience in an emergency department or pre-hospital setting.
- Preferred qualifications include certification as a West Virginia Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
The work environment for this position is fast-paced and rapidly changing, with exposure to biohazards, infectious diseases, and deceased patients. The ability to adapt to changing environments and effectively communicate with staff and patients is essential.
