Overview:

The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section is in search of an Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) Engineer to join the EI&C Engineering Group. This group is dedicated to the research and development (R&D) of innovative hardware and software solutions for various enrichment systems, reinforcing Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) position as a leader in isotope production and enrichment technology.

The Enrichment Systems Engineering Division plays a pivotal role in two essential domains: enhancing enrichment technologies and investigating stable isotope production and its applications. The division capitalizes on a distinguished team of scientists and engineers, utilizing the world-class capabilities of ORNL to achieve significant advancements applicable to national security and critical medical treatments.

As the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of gas centrifuge technology, the division is also expanding the nation’s stable isotope portfolio through advancements in electromagnetic isotope separation technology. The selected candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, and integration of I&C components for enrichment systems, ensuring that ORNL meets the nation's requirements for these crucial materials and technologies.

Purpose:

Provide engineering support across a variety of technical projects, programs, and operations, aligning with ORNL's goal to be the foremost R&D institution and fostering a culture of scientific excellence. Collaborate with EICE technical personnel to design, develop, integrate, and commission solutions that enhance I&C systems for the advancement of enrichment technologies and isotope production. The ideal candidate should exhibit competencies in relevant technical areas, adeptly address technical challenges with sound judgment, manage assigned tasks effectively, and pursue continuous learning and professional growth while adhering to ORNL's Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) standards.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with EICE technical experts to design, develop, and implement hardware and/or software solutions for various I&C systems utilized in process control applications.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot electrical equipment, including cabinets, panels, PLCs, circuit boards, and industrial sensor/transducer technologies.
  • Create technical documentation such as panel layouts, electrical wiring schematics, test plans, and operational instructions.
  • Assess hardware specifications and select necessary electrical components for control system designs.
  • Work alongside the EI&C group leader, project technical leads, and other ESED/EICE technical staff to define requirements for executing work in accordance with ESED quality assurance program policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks efficiently, and exhibit proficiency in all relevant equipment and procedures.
  • Collaborate across technical disciplines and cross-functional teams to develop solutions that meet project deliverables.
  • Engage in continuous learning, professional development, training, and process improvement initiatives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field is required, along with 2 years of relevant work experience or equivalent education.
  • Familiarity with industrial monitoring and control practices, as well as various sensor and transducer technologies.
  • Experience in developing electrical drawings, schematics, and BOMs using CAD software.
  • Proficiency in developing hardware interfaces for embedded systems, including ADCs, signal conditioning circuits, communication interfaces, power supplies, timing circuits, and memory.
  • Experience utilizing M&TE such as DMMs, function generators, oscilloscopes, and programmable power supplies.
  • Capable of producing design documentation, procedures, and test plans.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Proven ability to meet deliverables, manage task priorities, and adapt to changes in scope while maintaining safe and secure operations.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical for developing electrical drawings.
  • Competence in electrical/electronic circuit designs and experience implementing designs using PCB design software such as Altium Designer.
  • Familiarity with integrating, programming, and/or troubleshooting embedded control solutions.
  • Experience with industrial automation and data acquisition hardware/software, preferably Allen-Bradley PLCs, Rockwell Studio 5000 design software, National Instruments hardware, and/or LabVIEW.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic systems, water cooling systems, vacuum systems, flow/pressure control systems, and/or motor drives.
  • Understanding of basic network configurations and experience with common industrial communication protocols such as TCP/IP, EtherNET/IP, RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Profibus, and CAN/CANOpen.
  • Experience conducting work activities in compliance with Quality Assurance (QA) requirements and familiarity with Software Quality Assurance (SQA), Design Control, and Configuration Management practices.
  • Active DOE Q clearance is preferred.

Special Requirements:

HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. This position is designated for Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing, necessitating passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
