We are committed to creating a supportive environment that welcomes and respects all individuals. As an Aquatic Program Leader, you will play a key role in achieving our mission by teaching swim lessons and providing leadership, instruction, and motivation to students.
Nature and Scope
- You will report directly to the Aquatics Director and be responsible for instructing swim lessons to all age groups and skill levels.
- You will create and implement lesson plans according to age and swim level, and support members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- You will teach proper swimming techniques, including strokes, breathing, and water safety, in accordance with the YMCA adaptive swim lesson skills.
- You will provide feedback and encouragement to help students improve their swimming skills.
- You will ensure a safe and positive learning environment for all participants.
- You will monitor and manage student behavior during lessons.
- You will develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization.
- You will help participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA, and encourage parent or caregiver involvement.
- You will convey information on aquatics programs and schedules, and refer program participants and families to other programs as appropriate.
- You will maintain records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- You will follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- You will complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- You will organize and put away needed class equipment, and report damaged equipment.
- You will train and supervise class aides.
- You will support and lead quarterly in-services.
- You will have the ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- You will have the ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
Requirements
- You must hold a YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
- You must have CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
- You must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- You must complete Principles of Youth Development E-Learning within 30 days of hire.
- You must complete Y-USA Leader Certification within 90 days of hire.
- You must be at least 17 years old.
- You must have at least 6 months experience.
- You must have previous experience working with students.
- You must have strong swimming skills and knowledge of various swimming techniques.
- You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- You must be able to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles, for cognitive and physical disabilities.
- You must have knowledge of behavior management techniques for working with children.
- You must have CPR and First Aid certification, or be able to obtain it within 30 days of employment.
Estimated Salary: $45,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
