JOB TITLE: Cattle Feeding Operations Trainee
REPORTS TO: Department Supervisor (as assigned)
FLSA STATUS: Hourly (Temporary Employment 60-day apprenticeship), Ag exempt
FUNCTION: Engages in and executes the daily functions of the cattle feeding operation, encompassing the feed mill, feed distribution, animal health, and yard management.
TEMPORARY OPERATIONS TRAINEE:
All Five Rivers feedyards provide avenues to acquire hands-on experience in all facets of the cattle feeding sector. The operations trainee role is structured as a 60-day apprenticeship with potential for full-time employment upon successful completion. You will have the chance to rotate through at least two and up to all four departments.
- Feed Distribution – Acquire knowledge of various feed formulations and their effects on cattle performance. Operate a feed truck to deliver a specified quantity of feed to cattle daily, adhering to yard-specific protocols regarding precision, distribution, and timing.
- Feed Production – Understand the processes involved in feed manufacturing. Manage the receipt of commodities, ensure feed quality, and oversee production levels.
- Animal Health Management – Process cattle and learn best practices for maintaining cattle health.
- Yard Upkeep and Compliance – Gain insights into yard maintenance and environmental regulations.
DEPARTMENT ROTATION TIME FRAME
Minimum Two (2) Department Rotation Minimum 4 Week Rotation per Department
Minimum Three (3) Department Rotation Minimum 2/2/4 Week Rotation per Department
Four (4) Department Rotation Minimum 2 Week Rotation per Department
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- The operations trainee will rotate through a minimum of two and up to all four of the following departments: Mill, Feeding, Cattle, and Yard Operations. Responsibilities will vary based on trainee parameters, expectations, and the needs of the feed yard.
- Adheres to relevant OSHA, FDA, and EPA regulations; maintains appropriate compliance documentation.
- Demonstrates safe work practices and adheres to safety rules and policies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Genuine interest in the cattle feeding industry and/or relevant experience in agriculture.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety guidelines, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference to practical situations.
- Ability to solve practical problems and navigate a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPETENCIES:
Expected to utilize organizational resources efficiently, participate in daily/weekly team meetings, be an effective team member, demonstrate knowledge of EEO policy, adapt to changes in the work environment, exhibit sound judgment, observe safety and security protocols, and report potentially unsafe conditions.

While executing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor weather conditions.
