Overview:


The Operations Division encompasses multiple campuses of Tufts University, including the Medford/Somerville campus, the Boston Health Sciences campus, the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, and the Grafton Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine campus, which collectively feature 275 buildings and approximately 5.8 million gross square feet.

This division includes various teams such as Campus Planning, Capital Renewal, Capital Projects, Real Estate, Facilities and Engineering Services, Dining, Auxiliary Services, and Public Safety, all of which work together to support and enhance the strategic objectives of the University’s educational and research missions.


Campus Planning plays a crucial role in aligning the renovation and expansion of University facilities with academic, research, and community priorities. Our collaborative approach fosters the development of innovative and practical planning solutions for both the short and long term.

The Planning department is committed to utilizing our physical resources to further the University’s strategic goals, including the ambitious target of achieving decarbonization by 2050.


This position operates in a hybrid model, requiring a consistent on-campus presence at the Grafton Campus (3 days), one day at another Tufts campus, and one day of flexible remote work.


Key Responsibilities:


The Facilities Planner will primarily focus on the Grafton campus, home to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and its associated hospitals and clinics that provide care for various animal species.

The Facilities Planner will spearhead the development and execution of space, facility, and project planning strategies, including space program test fits.

In this role, the Facilities Planner will report to the Assistant Director of Campus Planning and collaborate closely with the Campus Planning Team on various projects and initiatives across the University.


In the coming years, the Cummings School will embark on a new facilities plan to facilitate growth as outlined in the School's Strategic Vision 2030. The Facilities Planner will assist in project development and enablement to support this vision, taking into account scheduling, enabling constraints, and the impact on campus systems and stakeholders.

The Facilities Planner will create planning solutions that reflect a comprehensive understanding of planning, design, and construction principles as they relate to educational environments, research and clinical facilities, administrative spaces, and broader land use, landscape, infrastructure, and transportation systems.

What We're Looking For:

Basic Requirements:
• A Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in architecture, campus/facility planning, facilities management, or interior design.
• Ability to work independently in a demanding environment, manage multiple relationships, and advance various assignments simultaneously to meet deadlines while being an effective team member.
• Fundamental understanding of building and campus infrastructure systems (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, etc.).
• High attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey ideas clearly in graphic formats.
• Proficiency in Autodesk products (Revit & CAD), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign) is required.
• Commitment to working effectively in a culturally diverse and inclusive environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with project management tools (e.g., PMWeb, Microsoft Project) and data management.
• Understanding of space planning and design for educational, research, and clinical environments, particularly within an academic or clinical context.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This position requires in-person presence in Grafton, MA for at least 3 days per week, one day per week at another Tufts campus, and flexibility for one day of remote work.
