Position Overview
A specialized 16-bed unit dedicated to the care of patients with Trauma and Neurological injuries during their critical recovery phases. Our patient demographic includes individuals ranging from 17 to 100 years old, with an average age of 60. Common injuries treated include blunt trauma from falls and vehicular accidents, alongside cases of gunshot wounds, stabbings, and agricultural injuries. We also manage neurological conditions such as strokes, brain bleeds, tumors, and seizures. As a Level I Trauma Center, our Registered Nurses are PALS certified to provide acute care for pediatric patients prior to their transport. We are recognized as a primary stroke center equipped with thrombectomy capabilities, ensuring our patients receive comprehensive care close to home.

Job Responsibilities

LOCATION: Lancaster, PA

HOURS: Full-time (36 Hours per Week), Night Shift (7:00pm-7:00am), every third weekend, rotating summer and winter holidays.

POSITION SUMMARY: Assume accountability and responsibility as defined by the American Nurses Association standards of nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed RN or an RN with less than 15 months of experience who demonstrates basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. This role seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice embodies the experience standards of Lancaster General Health, reflecting its mission and embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is responsible for providing direct care to patients across the lifespan, demonstrating competencies in Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics.

This role collaborates closely with the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate care coordination across the continuum. The nurse focuses on developing the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate considerations of assigned patients.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice requires consultation with experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback while demonstrating growth in caring for increasingly complex patients. The nurse illustrates how nursing practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals, as well as the care delivery system. Compliance with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies is essential.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice must complete all Clinical Nurse 1 competencies and is expected to advance to the Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague level within 18 months of professional practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Functions as an independent and interdependent member of the healthcare team as defined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Conducts patient assessments, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions. Evaluates progress toward outcomes and adapts care plans based on recognized trends and changes. Collects and manages comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or situation.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses or issues. Formulates age-appropriate and culturally sensitive care plans.
  • Implements care knowledgeably and coordinates patient care across multiple disciplines and caregivers.
  • Provides leadership to team members by effectively communicating expected standards of care and supporting their contributions.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to values of privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.
  • Assigns, delegates, and supervises other staff, ensuring the care plan is executed, continuity of care is maintained, and established outcomes are achieved through appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Educates patients on healthy practices and treatment options.
  • Continuously enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, utilizing technology as appropriate.
  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary responsibilities listed above:
  • Manages rapidly changing situations by following established protocols, coordinating with appropriate health team members and resources, and documenting events.
  • Participates in process improvement activities focused on enhancing continuity in nurse-patient relationships, minimizing redundancies, and seeking innovative solutions.
  • Completes mandatory education and training, including age-specific needs, caring behaviors, and interpersonal skills as defined by the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Maintains a safe working environment through compliance with evidence-based practice policies and timely reporting of safety variances.
  • Exhibits pride in work through day-to-day interactions with staff, coworkers, patients, and all stakeholders.
  • Seeks experiences and learning activities to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge.
  • Provides supervision, guidance, and mentoring to peers and subordinates to enhance learning experiences and improve the professional practice environment.
  • Participates in the employee performance process related to peers and subordinates; addresses employee issues as the first level of supervision; evaluates performance post-hire.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • RN licensure required, issued by the PA Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher nursing degree required.
  • New hires with a temporary practice permit must sit for their NCLEX within 60 days of starting in their RN role.
  • A graduate registered nurse may only practice professional nursing under supervision and with a current temporary practice permit.
  • All Clinical Nurse 1 RNs must successfully complete the Nurse Residency Program.
  • CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be a healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs.
