Job Summary

The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of assigned areas with minimal supervision. Key duties include mopping, dusting, trash removal, window washing, and other general cleaning responsibilities. The incumbent interacts positively with members and staff, responding to requests and demonstrating the YMCA core values of honesty, responsibility, caring, equity, and respect.

Essential Functions
  • Complete daily schedules and maintain daily upkeep of assigned areas and equipment.
  • Perform janitorial duties, including wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, meeting setup, pool cleaning, painting, and general cleaning as requested or needed.
  • Record and report needed repairs, repair as directed, and follow up with staff.
  • Ensure the YMCA building and property are secure during shifts and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisors.
  • Clean up blood or body fluids that may contain bloodborne pathogens.
  • Operate motorized equipment used for cleaning.
Relationships

This position reports to the Custodial Supervisor, who reports to the Executive Director. The incumbent works closely with staff to ensure the Association's standards of cleanliness are met and attends relevant training programs.

Qualifications
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing as needed.
  • Must be able and willing to develop knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment, basic understanding of equipment upkeep and care, understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and willingness to learn and share new and better methods of cleaning.
Work Conditions
  • Move up to 50 pounds of project materials and/or tools to remote building locations up to 200 feet away.
  • Erect and stand on scaffolding, ladders, and platforms.
  • Work at heights up to 30 feet for extended periods.
  • Work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in various forms.
  • Ability to paint, clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed.
  • Work in conditions that create dirt and dust.
  • Ability to report and record maintenance requests on the work board.
  • Perform essential housekeeping to facilities or equipment, which may involve semi-reach to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, working in narrow and/or confining spaces, twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs, and lying on stomach and/or back.
  • Ability to perform tasks outdoors in different climates.
  • Safely operate cleaning equipment, including auto scrubbers, buffers, snow blowers, sweepers, trash compactors, lifts, pressure washers, box compactors, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency/on-call situations.
