Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:
Develops and implements appropriate nutritional care for assigned patients/residents.
Evaluates the nutritional status of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients, including neonates and infants as applicable, through documentation in the medical record per hospital policies and state regulations.
Creates and updates a nutritional care plan based on information from the patient, medical record, family, and healthcare team members for those patients who will benefit from Medical Nutrition Therapy.
Makes recommendations for patient care using current evidence-based practices.Designs regular and modified menus based on guidelines outlined in the current diet manual and communicates this information with the patient and/or family members and healthcare team.
Educates patients and/or family members with relevant nutritional information to enhance their understanding of the patient's condition, support recovery, and improve functionality.
Specializes in neonatal nutrition to assess and provide dietary care for NICU patients, including but not limited to the ordering and management of parenteral nutrition.
Participates in programs aimed at promoting proper nutrition while maintaining a commitment to education and personal development. Delivers in-service education programs to hospital staff, long-term care staff, and food service personnel as appropriate. Engages in support groups, committees, teams, etc., as indicated by areas of responsibility. Attends departmental meetings, staff development, and professional programs as appropriate. Seeks educational opportunities to enhance clinical competency, including age-specific nutritional care, sufficient to meet licensure/registration requirements.Maintains effective written and verbal communication. Collaborates well with medical, nursing, and other healthcare team members through charting and individual consultations. This includes telephone, written, and electronic communication. Communicates effectively with other Nutrition Services staff members to coordinate clinical and food service for effective patient/resident care. Completes all required documentation, reports, and logs in a timely, professional, and thorough manner.
Performs Resource/Educator duties. May serve as a resource for Food Service Supervisors, Catering Associates, and Nutrition Services staff as applicable. May orient, mentor, and train staff and interns as applicable.
May visit patients in assigned nursing units or areas as applicable, ensuring that every patient is visited by a member of the management or professional team at least once during their hospital stay.
Executes job responsibilities correctly and safely while adhering to the rules of conduct. Complies with facility confidentiality, HIPAA regulations, and patient rights policies.Adheres to regulatory agency standards, including federal, state, and The Joint Commission, as evidenced by successful completion of surveys with no deficiencies.
Follows facility and department infection control policies and procedures and complies with the facility's protocols for Hazardous Materials and Waste Program. Participates in facility-wide and department Performance Improvement Programs and on Performance Improvement teams to enhance processes and patient care.Bariatrics:
Develops and implements appropriate nutritional counseling for pre-operative and post-operative bariatric patients.
