Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will be responsible for performing ultrasound examinations and providing high-quality images to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities- Perform ultrasound examinations on patients, using a variety of techniques and equipment to obtain high-quality images.
- Review patient charts and obtain pertinent clinical history, test results, and laboratory data to ensure accurate interpretation of ultrasound examinations.
- Explain exam procedures to patients, taking into consideration their physical and emotional needs, and maintaining ethical standards.
- Deliver patient care under the scope of your license and training.
- Utilize universal precaution techniques and safety protocols to ensure patient safety.
- Perform ultrasound studies on premature infants in an intensive care unit, requiring knowledge of illnesses related to this patient population and various types of care being provided.
- Be knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment used during the workday, notifying appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.
- Rotate within the department, divisions, and off-site clinics, by shifts as required and needed, cooperating with all personnel and promoting harmony within the department.
- Maintain effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.
- Execute paperwork, PACS, RIS, and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam.
- Prepare equipment, rooms, and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use, stocking and supplying rooms and general department areas as needed.
- May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department.
- Acknowledge and participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department.
- Assume all responsibilities for on-call coverage and remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.
- Remain up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment, participating in education programs and meeting state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.
- Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.
- Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.
- Must have graduated from an AMA-accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months' full-time clinical ultrasound experience.
- Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
- Must become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment.
- Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
- Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross-sectional anatomy.
- Work requires several weeks of training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques, and methods.
- Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
- Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
- Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
- A comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System for registering patients.
- Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
- Must be aware of hazards within the department, adhering to safety standards established by Brigham and Women's Hospital and other regulatory agencies.
- Normal teaching clinical hospital environment.
- Exposure to high-frequency sound waves.
- Possibility of contact with infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
- Standing and walking most of the day.
