Position Overview

Unavailable is in search of a Surgical Services Technician to join our GI Services team.

Role Summary

The Surgical Services Technician will operate under the close guidance of a Registered Nurse, taking on the responsibility of maintaining sterile techniques while preparing for and assisting in surgical operations. The Technician will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the instruments, materials, and procedures involved, ensuring that the needs of patients across all age groups—newborns, children, adults, and seniors—are met, while also anticipating the requirements of the physician and collaborating effectively with the Circulating Nurse.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Preferred: One (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Required: Good manual dexterity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure a safe and clean working environment.
    • Assess the cleanliness of the surgical area and equipment before each procedure.
    • Verify the operational readiness of all necessary tools and devices.
    • Confirm the proper sterilization of instruments, materials, and implants.
    • Adhere to safety protocols regarding electrical and fire hazards.
    • Implement electrosurgical safety measures.
    • Continuously monitor aseptic techniques, taking corrective actions as needed.
    • Handle instruments with care, ensuring any damaged items are addressed; pay special attention to delicate tools.
    • Understand and apply policies for managing contaminated cases.
    • Maintain the surgical room in a constant state of preparedness (stocked, organized, etc.).
  • Perform all duties associated with the scrub nurse role, under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
    • Organize daily cases and be prepared for upcoming procedures.
    • Be aware of legal responsibilities, counting all instruments, sponges, sharps, and needles with the circulating nurse as per hospital policy.
    • Assist in preparing patients for surgical interventions.
    • Support the physician during procedures.
    • Follow established protocols for handling specimens and cultures.
    • Assist in post-procedure activities.
    • Respond appropriately to unusual incidents.
  • Exhibit flexibility, motivation, and initiative in all tasks.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Practice good cost management.
  • Report to work as scheduled and adhere to designated working hours.
  • Show strong communication skills.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients of all ages.
  • Take responsibility for ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
