Position Overview: The Legal Department at San Diego Community Power is in search of an attorney to provide comprehensive legal guidance under the supervision of the General Counsel. This role is pivotal in delivering legal insights that align with local, state, and federal regulations, focusing on key areas such as public procurement, contract law, energy regulations, municipal law, and employment law.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the finance and operations teams in managing contracts and solicitations, including the review, negotiation, and finalization of various agreements.
  • Collaborate with external legal counsel on energy-related contracts, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment.
  • Offer legal expertise on issues pertaining to the Brown Act, California Public Records Act, and employment law, among others.
  • Design and deliver legal training sessions and briefings to enhance organizational understanding of legal matters.
  • Manage responses to public records requests, ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Provide guidance on customer privacy laws and cybersecurity requirements related to customer data.
  • Advise on regulations from the California Public Utilities Commission that impact the organization.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with internal and external obligations.
  • Support the General Counsel in advising the Board of Directors and attending public meetings.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Help develop and refine organizational policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated initiative and a strong work ethic in a dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional legal research capabilities with the ability to communicate findings effectively.
  • Proficient in engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and resolve complex issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual collaboration tools.

Educational Background:

Senior Legal Counsel candidates must possess:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and admission to the California State Bar.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in contracting, public agency, or energy law.

Principal Counsel candidates must possess:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and admission to the California State Bar.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in contracting, public agency, or energy law.

Work Environment: This position involves extended periods of sitting and working on a computer, with occasional local travel required.
