Communication Specialist for Children

Overview:
Under the guidance of the Director of Special Education, deliver speech and language therapy to children enrolled in the Smile program and provide itinerant speech therapy services.
Additionally, offer resources and support to parents and classroom educators to enhance effective communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:1) Conduct individual and small group therapy sessions for children in the Special Education program, as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
2) Assess the speech, language, and hearing abilities of children assigned for therapy using both formal and informal evaluation methods.
3) Monitor potential psychological, occupational, physical, and behavioral needs.
4) Prepare comprehensive speech and language summary reports and annual reviews that reflect each child's progress and current functioning level.
5) Advocate for children by participating in meetings as requested by the Director of Special Education.
6) Engage with parents regarding their child's progress and future educational placements. Participate in educational meetings for parents.
7) Fulfill all State Education record-keeping and reporting requirements, including:
Timely completion of IEP quarterly updates.
Annual review assessments, reports, and updates on IEP goals.
Recommendations for future placements.
Sharing results with parents/caregivers during conferences.
Presenting information at relevant meetings.
8) Comply with Medicaid requirements regarding documentation, therapy provision, and reporting.
Ensure all children on the caseload have current speech-language therapy prescriptions aligned with their IEPs.
Complete logs and timesheets accurately, adhering to Medicaid standards for contemporaneous notes as outlined in SSHSP training.
Evaluation Team Responsibilities:
Conduct speech, language, and hearing evaluations for students referred by the Committee on Preschool Special Education.
Prepare reports detailing diagnostic findings and compliance with established guidelines.
10) Participate in planning, team, integrated, and Special Education Department meetings.
11) Build and maintain positive relationships with parents and co-educators.
12) Provide ongoing professional advice regarding therapy techniques to speech and language therapists and classroom teams.
13) Supervise students involved in fieldwork.
14) Attend scheduled staff and in-service meetings.
15) When feasible, conduct or oversee annual screenings of preschool children enrolled in relevant programs and possibly collaborate with external agencies as needed.
Supervisory Duties:
No supervisory responsibilities except for interns when applicable.

Education and Experience:
M.A./M.S. in Speech Language Pathology, Certification as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Impaired, ASHA Certifications, Preferred CCC's or participation in a CFY program.
