Role Summary

The Operations Department's primary responsibility is to execute the production strategy and ensure adherence to schedules.

Executing the production strategy requires maintaining optimal quality, complying with relevant regulations, minimizing costs, and fostering a safe and motivated workforce.

The Operations Manager provides technical guidance in a complex and varied manufacturing setting to ensure product availability, uphold regulatory compliance, and enhance productivity.

This role involves managing resources and activities to guarantee comprehensive support from all departments to meet manufacturing requirements.

Oversee Operations initiatives to ensure that facilities, equipment, and processes for new products are developed, qualified, validated, and designed for efficient production.

Offer support to Operations regarding equipment troubleshooting, evaluation of improvement proposals, and incident investigations.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Operations team. Assume full responsibility for managing all shift operations, including Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, and Material/Inventory Management Systems.
Implement engineering solutions to enhance Plant Safety, Quality, and Financial Performance. Drive functional performance to meet the highest standards in quality, customer service, and regulatory compliance.
Identify and establish corrective and preventive measures as necessary. Develop, coordinate, and implement capital projects within Plant Operations.
Supervise junior and senior Production Supervisors and other production staff.

Identify and coordinate training and professional development needs for personnel, including production staff, to ensure a well-prepared workforce.

Provide technical expertise (Subject Matter Expert) for investigating manufacturing process-related incidents. Propose and/or establish corrective and preventive measures as necessary.

Ensure that Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and Process Descriptions are current and compliant with regulatory standards.

Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Validation, Maintenance, and Systems teams concerning manufacturing processes and equipment. Assist in executing validation activities related to equipment.

  • Lead the development, recommendation, and execution of enhancements to production processes and equipment, such as yield improvement, downtime reduction, and cycle time reduction, to boost productivity and compliance.
Supervise the assessment and preparation of formal investigations of process deviations related to production. Establish effective corrective actions to address root causes of incidents.
Coordinate with the Maintenance Department to schedule equipment repairs and maintenance without disrupting product throughput.

Coordinate activities with other support areas such as:
Supply Chain, Warehouse, Laboratories, Utilities, S&T, and QA to maintain operational continuity.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a closely related field is highly preferred, or equivalent technical experience with demonstrated competence.

Preferred 8+ years of combined significant engineering and/or operational experience (bulk chemical, pharmaceutical, engineering, utilities, biotechnology, project management).

Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment, and/or process and/or project management leadership experience.
A post-graduate education/degree is preferred and may contribute to the desired years of experience.
Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills to manage both exempt and non-exempt personnel.

An engineering degree is required to understand, lead, review, motivate, and communicate effectively with a team of graduate engineers and highly technical external consultants.

This position necessitates excellent interpersonal skills, a proven ability to lead in a team environment, adaptability to change, capability to manage competing priorities, analytical and problem-solving skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish, along with a sense of business acumen.

Must possess the ability to focus, take initiative, manage stress, and exercise judgment to achieve results.

High-level interpersonal skills are essential to lead and motivate a professional technical staff and to engage with all levels of management and professionals within the organization; to interface and negotiate with government agency personnel, consulting firms, and external contractors.

The incumbent must be able to manage and organize multiple priorities and achieve results within general guidelines.
