Purpose of Position

The primary function of the Accessibility Education Consultant is to deliver technical support, training, and resources to educators in developing accessible educational materials.

This role will also collaborate with colleagues in the Teaching, Technology, and Digital Accessibility (TTaDA) department, Student Disability Resources, and Equal Opportunity & Title IX to guide educators on the creation and remediation of accessible course materials.

Duties & Responsibilities


1. Provide technical support to educators in the development or remediation of course materials to ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA for PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, video/audio content).

2. Assist in the creation and evaluation of self-paced, anytime courses, online non-credit courses, and certificate programs to guarantee accessibility compliance.

3. Oversee the monitoring of course accessibility and gather/analyze data to generate reports on overall accessibility progress within the learning management system.

4. Assess the accessibility of instructional technology systems and software, offering recommendations on best practices.

5. Provide training and guidance to faculty and staff on remediating content to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards for various formats including PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, video/audio content, as well as Math ML/LaTex, and accessible graphs/maps.

6. Test resources/documents utilizing screen reading software, screen magnification software, Speech-to-Text software, and text-to-speech software.


Required Competencies
Ability to:

Demonstrate techniques for accessibility compliance remediation and provide relevant training; work independently; make informed decisions regarding accessibility issues; develop accessible web-based resources for education; create and maintain accessible web pages; communicate effectively in English in both individual and group settings; collaborate effectively with faculty and staff of varying technological skill levels; follow and give clear oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships; and demonstrate sensitivity to a diverse population.


Knowledge of:

Fundamentals and techniques for creating, producing, and remediating accessible web pages, online forms, and digital media; development, assessment, and remediation of accessible web pages in accordance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards; accessibility testing tools (screen reading software, screen magnification software, Speech-to-Text software, text-to-speech software); courseware authoring tools and/or learning management systems, with a particular focus on accessibility features of MS Word and Adobe Acrobat software.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree OR Associate degree with 3 years of experience in digital accessibility or a related field.

Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Experience in digital accessibility within educational contexts.

Experience in remediating PDFs using Adobe Pro and other PDF remediation tools and/or checkers.

Experience in remediating Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files.

Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Rehabilitation and Human Services, Special Education, Accessibility Studies, Communications Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Certification.

Experience with assistive software and technologies utilized in educational settings.
