We are seeking a skilled Construction Apprentice I to join our team at the City of Gainesville, GA. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will assist in the operation and maintenance of our water and sewer systems, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services to our customers.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to reports of water line, water meter, water main, or sewer line breaks, locating breaks and lines prior to digging, and finding shut-off valves using a locating device.
- Cut and fit pipes above or below ground to specifications necessary to install or repair water or sewer lines, assemble pipe systems, operate cutting tools and saws, and install or replace manholes, valves, and other pipe fittings.
- Raise, lower, or move water and sewer lines as needed due to new construction, assist in operating a boring machine, clean around fire hydrants, grease all fittings and fill hydrants with oil, paint fire hydrants, test hydrant flow to assure there are no blockages and adequate pressure is available, pump water out of ditches during repairs, and use a sewer jet to clean sewer lines.
- Use a sling blade and bush axe for clearing sewer line or utility right-of-ways, empty drying beds as instructed, paint equipment/machinery as needed, and may assist in cleaning facilities.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools to clear and maintain utility easements and right-of-ways, including shovels, axes, sling blades, bush axes, power tools, chain saws, and weed eaters.
- May put out road signs and flag traffic during construction.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs of equipment.
- Shovel asphalt from asphalt piles or from dump trucks, level holes with a loop, and pack asphalt with a hand tamp or gas-powered tamp.
- Assist with construction of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, level construction areas, build forms, mix cement, pour cement, and level cement using a bull float, hand float, and/or trowel.
- Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- DOT Certified Flagger (within 6 months from date of hire).
- Knowledge of department operations and procedures.
- Skill in operating hand and power tools and small equipment used by the department.
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to take and follow directions from a supervisor.
