Job Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Specialist at Penick Village Continuing Care Retirement Community is responsible for maintaining the community's grounds and facilities. This includes performing a variety of tasks such as collecting and discarding litter, operating maintenance equipment, and ensuring proper irrigation of lawns and plants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collects and discards litter or other waste materials.
  • Operates a variety of maintenance equipment such as shovels, rakes, or saws to complete assignments.
  • Ensures proper irrigation of lawns, trees, and plants using sprinkler systems, hoses, and watering cans.
  • Trims trees and vegetation and maintains flowerbeds.
  • Maintains sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, burial sites, or other features; performs general cleaning and snow removal.
  • Plans and cultivates lawns, turf, or gardens and, based on landscaping designs, determines further work that should occur.
  • Delivers and spreads topsoil and/or straw over newly seeded areas.
  • Prepares chemicals as needed for application by mixing according to directions.
  • Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides onto grass, shrubs or trees by using proper application techniques.
  • Performs regular and seasonal maintenance on irrigation systems including any necessary winterizing procedures.
  • Educates and consults with clients regarding plant selection, care, and costs of additional services and maintenance.
  • Mow grass, reseeding, fertilizing, trim trees/shrubs, etc.
  • Maintain and service equipment, hand tools, truck, and all related equipment.
  • Pick up paper and debris on campus from around all buildings, apartments and cottages.
  • Perform basic types of maintenance duties in the facility during inclement weather or as needed.
  • Responsible for filling equipment with fuel and/or oil and regular greasing and cleaning of equipment.
  • Work with the Director of Facility in planning and coordinating the work for new projects.
  • Perform small projects for the residents per written work order request that is approved by Facility Director.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from grammar school and at least three (3) years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep work, which involves some supervisory experience.
  • Experience in small engine maintenance and repair.
  • Must have knowledge of Disease and Pest in Lawn and ornamentals.
  • Must be experienced and knowledgeable in the care of Turf and Ornamentals.
  • Must understand and be able to use chemicals and fertilizer for treating ground.
  • Must have a good knowledge of how to operate ground equipment, including lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and hand tools.
  • Must have working knowledge of repairing ground equipment including replacing damaged parts and sharpen tools for cutting.
