Operating Room Surgical Specialist

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Under the guidance of a Physician and/or Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Responsible for establishing and sustaining a sterile environment, ensuring rapid turnover between surgical cases. Duties include cleaning and sterilizing instruments as necessary. Must possess strong teamwork and communication skills while upholding patient safety standards. Directly assists surgeons during various ocular procedures including cataract, glaucoma, cornea, and oculoplastic surgeries.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program is required. Certification in CPR is mandatory. A minimum of 1-2 years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prepares and maintains surgical instruments and equipment for procedures.

Prior to surgery, the surgical specialist organizes the operating room by arranging instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.

Adheres to established regulations and protocols to assist patients during pre-operative processes. Conducts necessary preparations on the patient's skin and medical equipment. Assembles both sterile and non-sterile instruments, ensuring proper functionality.

Facilitates patient transport to the operating room, assists in positioning on the surgical table, and covers with sterile drapes. Monitors vital signs, reviews medical charts, and aids the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves.

Passes instruments and sterile supplies to the surgical team, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and assists in counting sponges, needles, and instruments. Aids in the preparation, care, and disposal of specimens for laboratory analysis and assists in dressing applications. Operates sterilizers, surgical lights, and suction machines, and supports the operation of diagnostic equipment. Post-surgery, assists in transferring patients to recovery and ensures the operating room is cleaned and restocked.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
This role requires prolonged periods of standing and maintaining focus during surgical procedures. The work environment is clean, well-lit, and cool. There may be exposure to communicable diseases and challenging sights, odors, and materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care for patients.

Must understand the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's needs relative to their age-specific requirements, providing care as outlined in the center's policies and procedures.

Exhibits knowledge and skills pertinent to the surgical process.
Demonstrates effective communication abilities.
