Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Assessment Specialist plays a critical role in assessing patients within the Emergency Department and/or Hospital setting. Under the supervision of the Psychiatry Medical Director or designee, this clinical specialist performs comprehensive mental health assessments, exercising independent clinical judgment and responsibility. The successful candidate will serve as an integral partner in assessing the needs of Behavioral Health patients and effectively coordinate care with other partners involved in patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough Behavioral Health assessments or evaluations for admission, gathering information on suicide risk, alcohol and other drug history, mental health history, and other relevant items to determine appropriate level of care and disposition.
  • Utilize assessment information to determine recommendations for an appropriate care level.
  • Communicate and interface consistently with Emergency or medical floor staff and attending physicians to determine appropriate dispositional planning for patients.
  • Consult with Behavioral Health Physicians or BH staff to determine level of acuity and treatment indicated for patients.
  • Coordinate care and navigate dispositional planning either with Mercyhealth programs or make appropriate referrals to other entities/programs or community agents associated with patients.
  • Follow patients and assist with process until successful acceptance of patient for appropriate level of services within Mercyhealth, or community.
  • Communicate plan for disposition and/or interface with affected family members present with Behavioral Health patients.
  • Document thoroughly in electronic medical record the Assessment and rationale for dispositional plan of care.
  • Serve as liaison, consultant, and educator when possible to staff within system, to enhance assessment skills of other staff members regarding Behavioral Health patients. Additionally, may be called upon to speak in public, conduct in-service training, or assist in orientation of new hires.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of community resources for Behavioral Health patients. Consistently look for new resources within communities for appropriate dispositional planning.

Education and Experience

Masters degree in Social Work, Guidance and Counseling, Marriage and Family, PhD Psychologist, Psychiatric NP, or other state masters (or above) recognized Behavioral Health degree or completion agreement for enrollment in an accredited program. Prefer experience in Behavioral Health clinical setting.

Certification and Licensure

Licensure preferred. Or: Person is working actively on a plan toward obtaining clinical hours and state licensure as a LCSW, LMFT, LPC, PhD Psychologist or NP. TACT certification within 90 days. Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days. Maintain a valid driver license-preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Applicant must possess broad background of training and experience with various patient populations and modes of service delivery. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and general public.
