Job Description
Job Responsibilities
- Provide initial assessment and triage on all patients that present to the Emergency Department.
- Plan care according to appropriate nursing and medical needs.
- Perform ongoing assessment and evaluation of effectiveness of treatment modalities and care implemented based on review of patient's laboratory test and procedure results.
- Confirm with hospital protocol for complying with applicable statutes report child, sexual and other abuse.
- Confirm with hospital policy on reporting Domestic Violence.
- Perform nursing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patients in various areas of the Emergency Department, including Triage, Trauma Room, Surgery, Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Holding Area, and Diagnostic Area.
- Perform skills including but not limited to the following as outlined in the Nursing Policy and Procedures and Emergency Department specific competency:
- Administration of Intravenous Medication
- Administration of Oxygen
- Administration of Oral, Rectal, and Parenteral Medication
- Aseptic Technique/Infection Control Practices
- Blood, Blood Components, and Special Blood Products Transfusion
- Blood Alcohol Level Drawing
- Cardiac Monitoring, CPR
- CVP, A-Line, and Swan-Ganz Monitoring
- Controlled Drugs (handling)
- Cardioversion / Defibrillation
- Insertion of Oropharyngeal Airway
- LV Therapy and Phlebotomy
- NGT, Foley Catheter Insertion
- Oropharyngeal / ETT Suction
- Sexual Assault Evidence Collection
- Tracheostomy Care / ETT Care / Chest Tube
- Urine/Stool Specimen Collection
- Throat Culture
- Blood Culture Specimen Collection
- Vascular Access Port
- Visual Acuity
- Wound Irrigation, Cleansing, and Dressing
- Assist the physician with procedures such as Bedside Bronchoscopy, Gastroscopy, Endoscopy, Lumbar Puncture, Intubation, Peritoneal Lavage, Chest Tube Insertion, Hemostatic Measures, CVP, Swan-Ganz, A-Line Insertion, Temporary Pacemaker Insertion/placement.
- Administer medication, record vital signs, and document other findings in patient's medical record.
- Instruct patients/families regarding health and discharge instructions and follow-up clinic visit.
- Maintain preparedness to respond to emergency situations, e.g., Rapid Response (RRT), Code Blue, Internal and External Disaster.
- Participate in Performance Improvement activities in the ED and Hospital-Wide.
Required Skills and Qualifications
1. Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
2. Holds or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
