Job Overview
The Milwaukie Police Department comprises a committed team of 35 sworn officers and eight non-sworn personnel, dedicated to serving a community of approximately 21,000 residents. Our agency offers various specialty roles, including Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Public Information Officer, K9 Handler, SWAT Team Member, Hostage Negotiations Team Member, School Resource Officer, Transit Police Officer, Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement Officer, and Criminal Reconstruction and Forensic Technician (CRAFT) Team Member.
We are currently seeking certified Police Officers who are motivated and enthusiastic about joining one of the leading law enforcement agencies in the state.
Qualifications:
To be eligible for the lateral police officer position, candidates must possess a minimum of two years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, have worked as a full-time paid officer within the past year, and have successfully completed a state-certified basic police training academy. The final determination of eligibility will be made by the Chief of Police based on background and experience.
Hiring Process for Qualified Lateral Candidates:
- Bypass written testing and ORPAT
- Initial screening interview
- Chief/Command Staff interview
- Background check
- Psychological and physical exams
- Salary range placement based on an evaluation of past work experience
- Vacation frontloaded with 40 hours of leave
- Sick leave frontloaded with 48 hours of leave
5% for an Associate's degree and/or possessing a DPSST Intermediate Police Officer Certificate.
10% incentive pay for a Bachelor's degree and/or possessing a DPSST Advanced Police Officer Certificate.
Additional Incentives:
- Bilingual incentive pay, 5% of base pay
- FTO incentive pay, 7.5% of base pay
- Detective incentive, 7.5% of base pay
- K-9 handler, 5% of base pay
- School Resource Officer, 5% of base pay
- Acting Sergeant incentive, 10% of base pay
- Public Information Officer, 5% of base pay
- Medical, Vision & Dental, with the city covering 95% of the premium
- Accrue 10 hours of holiday leave each month
- $100,000 city-paid life insurance plan
- City-paid PERS retirement
- City-paid 3.5% deferred compensation contribution to a 457(b) plan
- On-site fitness center open 24/7
Key Responsibilities:
- Patrol assigned areas and engage with the public to prevent crime and enhance community safety.
- Respond to emergencies and manage difficult situations.
- Investigate crime and traffic incidents, providing first aid and gathering vital information.
- Utilize independent judgment to assess complex situations and determine appropriate responses.
- Enforce state and local laws and ordinances.
- Conduct community-oriented policing and educate the public on crime prevention.
- Prepare necessary documentation for legal proceedings.
- Maintain positive public relations and respond to community needs.
- Ensure departmental equipment and facilities are well-maintained.
- Contribute to a safe working environment for self and others.
To qualify as a lateral police officer, candidates must have completed a basic police academy and possess at least two years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet driving standards.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- Ability to read and write in English.
- No disqualifying criminal history within the past seven years.
- Pass a background investigation, medical and psychological exam, and drug screening.
- Basic computer literacy and keyboard skills.
