The Maps Experimentation Engineering team is on the lookout for a skilled software engineer with substantial backend application development experience to enhance our A/B testing platform.

Our team collaborates closely with engineers, statisticians, data scientists, product managers, and mapping specialists to refine our core product that serves millions of users daily.

Key Responsibilities:

The Apple Maps Evaluation team is in search of talented engineers.

We develop large-scale data and computing platforms, alongside essential services, to enable engineers, statisticians, and scientists to innovate and experiment with algorithms aimed at enhancing the accuracy and quality of Apple Maps' global dataset.


We oversee the A/B experimentation platform for Apple Maps, tackling complex challenges at a vast scale.

We seek a backend engineer focused on customer needs to help construct our experimentation infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in architecting, building, and managing large-scale backend applications, with familiarity in A/B experimentation methodologies.


As a core contributor to our A/B testing systems, you will collaborate with engineers, statisticians, data scientists, product managers, and mapping experts to enhance a vital product that impacts millions of users worldwide.

Working within a cross-functional team, you will engage with innovative challenges surrounding experimentation and distributed systems while prioritizing user privacy.


  • Demonstrate expertise in object-oriented software development, engineering standards, and design patterns.
  • Manage critical production services ensuring high uptime and performance, implementing appropriate monitoring and alerting systems to identify potential issues, and applying automation for deployment and validation to ensure safe production changes.
  • Exhibit strong investigative and analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues within critical systems. Proficiency in debugging and understanding distributed systems, backend services, and relational databases is essential.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and data science teams across Maps and Apple to align on experimentation systems that encompass client applications, backend services, core infrastructure, and data analytics pipelines.
  • Convert data science requirements related to statistics and analysis into functional experimentation software that enhances Apple's capacity for data-driven decision-making.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Proficient in Java development and managing JVMs.
  • Experience with major web service frameworks (e.g., Dropwizard, Spring, Akka, Spray, Play).
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle).
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong desire to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and a commitment to software development best practices.
  • Knowledge of performance optimization, large-scale deployment, continuous integration, and unit testing.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing methodologies.
Compensation & Benefits:

At Apple, base pay is one component of our comprehensive compensation package, determined within a defined range.

This allows for growth as you advance in your role.

The base pay range for this position is between $115,731 and $204,000 annually, with your specific base pay dependent on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become shareholders through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.

Employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards and can purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
