Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Specialist role is pivotal in delivering patient care and services to a diverse range of patients and their families. This position involves performing essential medical tasks such as EKGs and lab specimen collection under the supervision of licensed nursing staff or healthcare providers. The EMT Specialist is responsible for executing daily living activities within defined unit limits and job responsibilities. This role requires a solid understanding of patient care protocols and the ability to communicate effectively while executing delegated tasks, ensuring that patient needs are met through regular monitoring and documentation.

Core Responsibilities

  • Team Collaboration: Actively participates as a team member, responding positively to colleagues' requests for assistance. Fosters a supportive work environment and engages in problem-solving while managing multiple priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Mentorship: Serves as a role model and mentor for new EMTs and support staff, guiding them in unit procedures and readiness.
  • Effective Communication: Engages with peers, staff, and physicians in a respectful manner, promoting open dialogue to ensure mutual understanding and effective patient care.
  • Educational Resource: Acts as a resource for unit competency and validation processes relevant to the role.
  • Engagement Improvement: Contributes to enhancing department scores for employee engagement through accountability and teamwork.

Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient Care: Provides patient-centered care under the guidance of a registered nurse, documenting screenings, treatments, and procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Patient Monitoring: Conducts hourly rounds to assess patient needs and conditions, reporting any changes to nursing staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Patient Satisfaction: Aims to improve patient satisfaction scores through effective communication and bedside reporting.

Quality and Safety Functions

  • Assessment Skills: Utilizes rapid assessment techniques to identify patient conditions and communicates findings to nursing staff.
  • Information Management: Manages incoming patient information and ensures patient privacy and safety.
  • Incident Reporting: Reports near misses and errors promptly to enhance safety protocols and quality improvement initiatives.

Resource Management

  • Efficiency: Utilizes resources judiciously and assists with inventory management to maintain supply levels.
  • Time Management: Demonstrates effective time management skills, prioritizing tasks to minimize overtime.

Professional Development

  • Continuous Learning: Seeks opportunities for professional growth and development, engaging in learning activities that align with departmental goals.
  • Innovation: Participates in performance improvement projects and contributes innovative ideas to enhance patient care.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent; completion of an EMT-Paramedic program or current enrollment in such a program.
  • Experience: Minimum of six months of pre-hospital or hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic.
  • Licenses and Certifications: State licensure as an EMT-Advanced or EMT-Paramedic, along with BLS, ACLS, PALS, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certifications.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills in patient interactions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Competent in using electronic health records and other computer systems.
