Job Summary

A Senior Manager, Sales and Use Tax is responsible for providing expert guidance to clients on sales and use tax implications related to their business objectives. This role involves recommending alternative courses of action, identifying methods of complying with sales and use tax statutes and regulations, and marketing, networking, and business development within the area of experience and specialization.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Research
    • Identify complex sales and use tax situations requiring research, providing an outline of the issue(s) and the appropriate source of research to be conducted.
    • Analyze researched facts and sources prior to composing a detailed report or preparing a taxability matrix of research findings.
    • Develop relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel.
  2. Tax Compliance
    • Conduct detailed reviews of sales and use tax returns, identifying significant sales and use tax issues.
    • Evaluate company compliance processes and provide customized and automated solutions for reporting sales and use tax obligations.
  3. Tax Consulting
    • Draft tax memorandums, tax opinions, and other documentation on various sales and use tax issues.
    • Review client operations to determine states where sales and use tax returns should be filed.
    • Review client records to ensure proper resale and exemption certificates are maintained and develop procedures for retaining proper resale and exemption certificates.
    • Apply all applicable state tax consulting sub-specialties and confer with other STS professionals when necessary.
    • Ensure tax engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work commencing and manage engagements.
    • Assist in developing consultative sales and use tax strategies.
    • Manage client expectations.
  4. Tax Controversy
    • Draft responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
    • Represent clients before tax authorities on contested sales and use tax issues.
    • Provide assistance with exam support.
  5. Tax Related Software
    • Utilize sales and use tax research databases and other sales and use tax-related software in completing assigned tasks.
  6. Tax Specialization
    • Provide technical client service to multi-state companies with sales and use tax issues.
    • Negotiate settlements and voluntary disclosure agreements on sales and use tax matters.
    • Draft technical memoranda regarding sales and use tax issues.
  7. ASC 450/FAS 5
    • Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to ASC 450/FAS 5 for sales and use tax contingencies.
  8. Strategy Development
    • Review studies of sales and use tax implications to identify alternative courses of action to benefit clients.
    • Develop new or improved ideas to advance the position of clients through reduction in sales and use taxes or expenses or offering of non-tax benefits.
    • Assist with researching potential sales and use tax strategies.
    • Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  9. Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on assigned engagements and review work product.
    • Ensure STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns are trained on all relevant tax software.
    • Evaluate the performance of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates and assist in developing goals and objectives to enhance professional development.
    • Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete performance evaluations for STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
    • Act as Career Advisor to STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, as appropriate.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or other relevant field required.
  • Master's degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.

Experience:

  • Eight+ years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience required.
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
  • Significant business development and marketing of sales and use tax engagements experience required.

License/Certifications:

  • CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.

Software:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferred.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.

  • Ability to encourage team environment on engagements and contribute to the professional development of assigned personnel.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements.
  • Ability to successfully interact with professionals at all levels.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of sales and use tax services.
  • Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in sales and use tax filings.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause/effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential sales and use tax issues.

Salary Range:

National Range: $99,750 - $262,500

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 - $262,500

Washington DC Range: $99,750 - $262,500
