Job Summary
The Wound Care Technician supports and facilitates the treatment and healing of patients under the direction of the Wound and Hyperbaric Service. The incumbent assists Physicians and other licensed providers in providing cost-effective, high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs clinical duties within acceptable standards of care as needed for assigned facility.
- Assists with setting up equipment and instruments and prepares patients for procedures.
- Provides patient care as directed and within training provided, including removing dressings, applying topical therapies, and applying wound dressings.
- Utilizes clean and sterile techniques for NPWT applications and other procedures.
- Obtains ankle or brachial index measurements on patients under direction of ordering clinicians and department policy.
- Performs intake process as specified by provider and nursing staff, including chief complaint, history, vital signs, height, weight, OFC, care process model data, wound pictures, and measurements.
- Provides patient instruction and care as directed, including dressing application, wound cleansing, and care of compression wraps.
- Reports changes in patient condition or other pertinent patient information to the provider or nursing staff.
- Participates in continuous improvement initiatives and implements ideas to improve the department and team.
- Assists patients with questions, directions, coordinating transportation, scheduling follow-up appointments, or arranging appointments with referral providers when needed.
- Recognizes and appropriately responds to emergency situations.
- Assembles necessary documents and supplies and maintains inventory of supplies by ordering and restocking as needed to ensure availability for patient care.
- Utilizes computer applications as needed and accurately documents patient history, physical, and vital information into the medical record.
- Maintains medical records and other relevant information.
- Ensures orders for home health, durable medical equipment, skilled nursing facility, etc. are completed and communicated appropriately.
- Assigns appropriate procedural and diagnostic coding under the direction of the provider and facilitates timely billing by completing necessary documentation.
Requirements
- Current certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in state of practice, or
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant (MA) in state of practice, or
- 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant, or
- Current certification as an Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) in state of practice.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
- Experience with safe patient transfers.
- Completion of competency assessment and skills checklist within 90 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
