Job Summary

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Wildland Firefighter Leader to join our team. As a key member of our wildland fire module or crew, you will exercise leadership and execute fire management activities with expertise and precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct wildland fire modules or crews in executing fire management activities, including planning, coordinating, and directing fire-line resources.
  • Mentor and instruct lower-graded employees on crewmember duties, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles effectively.
  • Plan and direct the utilization of fire-line resources on less complex fires, and for more complex fires, direct assigned suppression operations and recommend/ implement tactical strategies for attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires.
  • Adjust actions based on changing information and evolving situational awareness, ensuring the safety of personnel and the effective management of wildland fires.
  • Coordinate with aircraft for aviation support missions, including coordinating logistics and placing caches of equipment and supplies at strategic points.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct helicopter operations in support of mission requests, briefing pilots, contract personnel, and crews on mission requirements.
  • Provide radio communications to dispatch and/or ground firefighter and navigate with the use of maps, ensuring effective communication and situational awareness.
  • Direct aviation safety processes in coordination with pilots, ensuring aircraft tracking procedures are in place and followed.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of wildland fire management principles and practices.
  • Must have experience leading and directing wildland fire modules or crews.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with team members, dispatch, and other stakeholders.
  • Must be able to navigate with the use of maps and provide radio communications.
