Position Overview
This role is responsible for executing tasks essential for patient treatment as per the physician's directives and departmental protocols. Operates autonomously in various acute and critical care environments. Collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals, providing recommendations on patient care as necessary. Must have the expertise to treat patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. All staff members are expected to embody and uphold Prisma Health's core values of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently performs respiratory therapy procedures in both general and critical care settings, adhering to physician orders, departmental policies, and established Respiratory Care guidelines. - 30%
- Capable of obtaining arterial blood gases from various sites, analyzing and accurately reporting results. - 10%
- Initiates, monitors, and manages patients requiring both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. - 20%
- Initiates and oversees all types of airway management and associated equipment. - 10%
- Thoroughly documents and charges for all respiratory care activities and provides education to patients and their families as needed. - 10%
- Effectively communicates with all members of the healthcare team, including students and nursing shadows, providing complete and accurate reports. Makes recommendations as necessary and maintains good communication with supervisors and coordinators. - 10%
- Follows infection control protocols and quality improvement initiatives. Conducts proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of equipment between patients as required by equipment type and isolation status. - 10%
- Demonstrates responsible stewardship of resources, including supplies and time management. - 10%
Associate's Degree - Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Care Program
Alternative Qualifications
Consideration may be given for diploma and/or relevant experience in lieu of an associate degree.
Required Certifications and Licenses
South Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner license
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
BLS Certification
NBRC credentials (must be maintained)
Additional certifications may be required based on work unit: NRP, PALS, ACLS, NPS
ACLS certification required within the first year for adult care areas
NRP and PALS certifications required in pediatric settings prior to independent work in NICU and PICU
