ROLE SUMMARY:
The CNC Machinist Specialist is responsible for setting up and operating CNC, manual, semi-automatic, or automatic machinery, either independently or in conjunction with other machines. The role requires adherence to precise tolerances and the application of accepted machining methods and practices. Regular inspection of work and documentation of results are essential to ensure quality standards are met. The specialist will also manage tooling requirements to minimize downtime and may provide input on methods to enhance production efficiency while collaborating closely with manufacturing teams. Additionally, the role includes performing minor preventative maintenance as necessary and executing other assigned tasks.

SKILL COMPLEXITY AND JUDGMENT:
This position demands a high level of skill and judgment in operating CNC and manual machinery, including the setup and layout of work. Responsibilities include calculating and adjusting machine offsets and verifying part conformity. The specialist must be capable of adapting or modifying processes, CNC programs, or setups, in consultation with supervisors as needed. Maintaining a safe and organized workspace is critical, along with completing tasks efficiently and demonstrating reliability and sound judgment.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate should possess the ability to interpret technical drawings, job layouts, and specifications. Proficiency in using various precision measuring tools and applying shop mathematics is required. Comprehensive training in fundamental machining operations is essential, along with familiarity with NC/CNC machine operations across a range of equipment. Knowledge of the cutting characteristics of different metals is also important. A high school diploma or equivalent, combined with 2-3 years of shop training, is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Candidates should have two to three years of experience in manual and NC/CNC machining, with a minimum of six months specifically in NC/CNC operations (including lathes, boring mills, machining centers, etc.).

INITIATIVE:
The CNC Machinist Specialist should be able to work with minimal supervision, either independently or as part of a team. Effective communication of issues and solutions to manufacturing personnel is crucial. The ability to make decisions within established guidelines and proactively seek out the next assignment is expected.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This role involves standing for extended periods and operating one or multiple machines. It may require frequent lifting and handling of medium-weight castings, with chain hoists available for heavier items. Some tasks may necessitate working in awkward positions. Employees in this role must be able to walk, hear, and use their hands for various tasks, including handling tools and controls. The ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds is required. Specific vision capabilities necessary for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Working conditions may be quite noisy, with exposure to dust, flying chips, heat, and certain fumes. Employees may also experience varying outdoor weather conditions. The foundry environment may expose workers to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, depending on the season. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) includes, but is not limited to, steel-toed footwear, hearing protection, eye protection, and appropriate respiratory masks.
