Job Title: Physical Therapist - Cardiac Rehabilitation

Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is seeking a highly skilled Physical Therapist to join our Cardiac Rehabilitation team. As a Physical Therapist in this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Job Summary:

The Physical Therapist will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to patients with cardiac conditions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physical therapy, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Examine and evaluate patients' physical therapy needs, formulate a physical therapy diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan with treatment goals directed towards maximizing cardiovascular function.
  • Demonstrate competency in all clinical knowledge and skills specific to cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Consult with other members of the healthcare team to ensure coordination and effectiveness of therapies provided.
  • Participate in implementation of quality assurance program for clinical service, especially in area of subspecialty expertise.
  • Assist in implementation of triaging, prioritizing, monitoring admissions, referrals, and discharges to and from the service as assigned.
  • Participate in special interest group or committee within the Department to promote staff education and program development, with an emphasis on subspecialty area of expertise.
  • Assist in proper care and distribution of department supplies and equipment, making recommendations for adequate inventory and appropriate and new equipment.
  • In the absence of the program director, assumes duties and responsibilities as assigned by the director.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, which help to formulate policies, procedures, and program development.
Qualifications:
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited physical therapy program.
  • Must possess a current unrestricted license to practice physical therapy from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience and a performance record that consistently exceeds expectations.
  • Must be ACLS certified.
  • Professional certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) preferred.
  • Current cardiac rehabilitation experience preferred.
  • Current experience with Epic electronic medical record and LSI cardiac rehabilitation monitoring system preferred.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
  • Must possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to manage a cardiac rehabilitation patients seen individually as well as manage patient groups.
  • Must possess analytical abilities and sound knowledge in Physical Therapy to effectively care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease.
  • Work requires up to three months orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with department and hospital policies and procedures, and the specific quality standards of care and competencies, and procedures unique to the assigned patient area.
  • Must possess effective communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with patients (up to 70% of work time), rehabilitation and medical team (up to 20% of work time), and patients' families (up to 10% of work time).
  • Work requires prolonged walking and standing (up to 95% of work time).
  • Must be proficient in the principles of adult education and be able to create and present formal and informal educational programs using digital tools.
  • Must be familiar with the principles and practices of motivational interviewing.
  • The therapist must demonstrate competency in assessment and treatment relative to age-specific needs for the patient population for which they provide therapy, and as described in the department's practice standards.
  • Must be proficient in the exercise evaluation and training of the patient with complex cardiovascular disease, including interpretation of cardiovascular diagnostic reports, stress testing and thoracic surgical procedures.
  • Must be familiar with exercise prescription methodology for cardiovascular endurance exercise and resistance training in a broad range of patients with heart disease.
  • Must be able to recognize life-threatening arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia or infarction, hypoxemia, hypotension and other signs of exercise intolerance.
