Position Overview:

The Campus Safety & Security Department is committed to fostering a secure environment for the university community through dedicated and professional service. The primary role of the Campus Safety Officer involves safeguarding life and property within the university premises.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement community policing initiatives to enhance campus safety.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of reported incidents and crimes, making arrests when necessary, and preparing detailed reports.
  • Enforce university regulations and applicable state laws on campus.
  • Investigate traffic incidents occurring on university grounds and document findings.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and disasters, providing first aid or CPR/AED as required.
  • Assist in student safety training, including fire drills and emergency preparedness.
  • Manage alarm responses, including panic, fire, and burglary alarms.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of activities.
  • Monitor surveillance systems to ensure campus safety.
  • Check in authorized visitors and vendors, ensuring compliance with campus policies.
  • Secure and unlock facilities as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess good moral character with no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a California P.O.S.T. approved basic police academy is required.
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.
  • Possession of necessary security permits and certifications.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and effective decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage positively with a diverse community.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to operate campus safety vehicles.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED is required; an Associate's degree is preferred.
  • Prior experience in university public safety or law enforcement is advantageous.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and perform physical activities for extended periods.

Work Environment:

The work environment may include exposure to outdoor conditions and various noise levels. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
