This includes overseeing both physical and virtual Linux (primary) and Windows (secondary) servers across multiple on-campus data centers.

Role Responsibilities:

The Systems Engineer will engage in complex system management and administrative tasks to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of server systems that support research, instruction, and administration within the College. Key responsibilities include:
  • Installation, updates, and remediation of multiuser enterprise server Linux operating systems, including Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise.
  • Maintenance of storage server systems and technologies such as NFS, SMB, ZFS, NIS, and OpenLDAP.
  • Design and management of network systems, including private storage and research networks.
  • Installation of physical servers, switches, and communication cabling in data center and research lab environments.
  • Design, implementation, and maintenance of virtual infrastructures like Proxmox and container technologies such as Docker.
  • Support for networking services including DHCP, DNS, LDAP, SSH, and PostFix.
  • Installation and updates of commercial and open-source Linux applications, utilizing automation tools like Ansible.
  • Support for Linux development environments, including GitLab servers and advanced Python configurations.
  • Management of server system monitoring, penetration testing, and vulnerability remediation tasks.
  • Web server support for Apache, PHP, MySQL, and NGINX.
  • Development and deployment of generalized OS layouts for servers and research systems using unattended deployment methods.
  • Maintenance of backup infrastructure for servers, research instrument control systems, and Linux workstations.
  • Collaboration with researchers and IT staff to create innovative solutions for high-performance research projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Systems Engineer: High school diploma with 11 years of experience OR Associate's degree with 7 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree with 3 years of experience.
Typical salary range: $68,200 - $81,100.

Senior Systems Engineer: Bachelor's degree with 6 years of experience.
Typical salary range: $75,867 - $91,833.

Scope of Experience:
Relevant IT experience in the administration of distributed computer systems, preferably in a university setting.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
