Mountain View, California, United States Waymo Full time
Job Description

Waymo is a leading autonomous driving technology company with a mission to provide safe and reliable transportation solutions. Our Systems Engineering team is responsible for designing and developing the Waymo Driver, a highly advanced autonomous driving system.

We are seeking a highly skilled Motion Systems Engineer to join our team. As a Motion Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing motion control systems for our autonomous vehicles. This includes creating and managing motion control actuator requirements, driving architecture discussions, and evaluating electrical, mechanical, and software architecture of the motion control system.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in system engineering principles, including requirements definition, formal verification, and validation methods. They will also have experience working with electro-mechanical systems, particularly in the automotive or aerospace industries. Additionally, they will have strong SW development experience, including C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.

We prefer candidates with experience working at an automotive OEM or supplier, specifically on motion control actuation systems. Experience working on ADAS or other self-driving automotive systems is also a plus. Familiarity with automotive functional safety (ISO 26262) is a requirement.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.

Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage motion control actuator requirements for braking, steering, and/or propulsion through the full requirement life cycle
  • Drive architecture discussions focusing on motion control performance, fault tolerance, and reliability
  • Evaluate electrical, mechanical, and software architecture of the motion control system, and contribute to hardware and software design reviews
  • Coordinate motion control actuator integration to the self-driving system from prototype development to fleet deployment
  • Investigate field issues and bugs with both internal and external partners
  • Sign-off motion control actuators for driver-less operation via a variety of testing and analyses

Requirements:

  • 3 or more years of experience designing or testing electro-mechanical systems, particularly automotive, aerospace, or other safety-critical systems
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant Engineering or a related field (including ME, EE, CS, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent practical experience
  • SW development experience (including C/C++, Python, or MATLAB)
  • Strong foundation in system engineering principles such as requirements definition, formal verification, and validation methods

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working at an automotive OEM or supplier, specifically on motion control actuation systems
  • Experience working on ADAS or other self-driving automotive systems
  • Experience working with standard automotive development processes including project gateways, phases, etc.
