Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Hawaii County, HI. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and participating in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems, as well as reviewing and analyzing plans and specifications for mechanical engineering features and compliance with code requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates the installation, maintenance and repair of all island-wide plant facilities and operations.
  • Serves as the principal consultant and advisor on technical concerns dealing with mechanical and electric/electrical activities for existing and proposed facilities.
  • Develops, directs, and coordinates the preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance activities of treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Reviews, advises upon, and initiates any changes to the existing plant facilities to correct and prevent mechanical or electrical failure causing water interruption.
  • Assists the Operations Division head or during his absence handles any operations of the island-wide system in receiving and handling of water interruption calls and complaints.
  • Makes office and field studies of proposed projects and recommends the design, type, selection, and location of equipment.
  • Supervises the installation, testing, and acceptance of new facilities and equipment.
  • Plans, supervises, and participates in the specifications for equipment or plant facility repairs or renovations of major existing deep wells or booster pumping units or facilities.
  • Supervises, reviews, and recommends approval/disapproval of, and changes to, plans and specifications of proposed projects, mechanical equipment and appurtenances for compliance with plumbing, mechanical, and other pertinent code requirements.
  • Supervises and/or conducts preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units and plant facilities.
  • Supervises and/or conducts periodic tests to determine operational efficiency of existing pumping units and plant facilities, including analyzing system water losses, pump efficiencies, power charges, plant facilities, recorders and charts; recommends corrective action as required.
  • Participates in the review of all modifications to contracts and change orders for maintenance and repair work.
  • Recommends the adoption of new technology and programs for the plant section including cost analysis and benefit studies, in-service training, and safety programs.
  • Inspects repair work, new projects, and contract work.
  • Conducts studies, compiles data, and reports; prepares technical reports and correspondence.
  • Oversees the maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Reviews and comments on all shop drawings and submittals pertaining to mechanical and electrical facilities, inspections, and acceptance tests of all plant facilities and equipment, purchase requisitions or payments, and occasionally assigned as project engineer in design or construction related to plant facilities.
  • Serves as consultant to department personnel engaged in the inspection of plumbing construction work.
Requirements
  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work (baccalaureate degree) in mechanical engineering.
  • One (1) year of registered professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional mechanical engineer in the State of Hawai`i at the time of filing.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing.
