Job Title: Classified Nurse

Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Classified Nurse to join our team. As a key member of our Unified Student Supports Team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students.

Job Summary:

The Classified Nurse will provide health care services aimed at helping students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health. This includes evaluating health status/complaints of students, providing health counseling services, and performing skilled nursing procedures as ordered by a physician/provider.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide health care services to students, including acute and chronic care, health counseling, and skilled nursing procedures.
  • Evaluate health status/complaints of students and take appropriate action within the legal scope of nursing practice.
  • Provide health education to students and families with health-related problems and link them to resources as needed.
  • Correspond with parents on the health needs of their child.
  • Perform skilled nursing procedures as ordered by a physician/provider, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Render emergency first aid care and complete incident reports when applicable.
  • Recognize and act on communicable diseases present in school/community, including mandatory reporting to the State Dept of Health.
  • Administer medication according to IPS policy and procedure.
  • Provide school staff with health education in-services as needed.
  • Participate with team members for student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and 504 plans, providing expertise and completing health assessments as indicated for initial, annual, and re-evaluations under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Provide health assessments for students upon request of teachers, parents or staff under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Inform appropriate school personnel of a student with health issues, that may need accommodations during the school hours.
  • Interpret the defined health problem, application of school Health law's, current trends, and general health information to the school staff and parents.
  • Act as a liaison between parents, provider, and staff to verify medical needs, obtain physician authorization, and notify appropriate district Personnel.
  • Serve as a health education resource for students, staff, and families.
  • Monitor and maintain up-to-date and accurate health records, including immunization records and medical alerts, in SchoolCare, electronic health record system, and/or PowerSchool when applicable as required by law, board policy, and administrative guidelines.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordinating state-mandated health screenings, including collecting and reporting records for the annual Indiana School Health Report.
  • Monitor compliance with immunization requirements according to legal mandates and District policy and procedures. Oversees follow-up with non-compliant cases.
  • Participate on school wellness team following the district wellness policy.
  • Assist in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.
  • Maintain clinic space and stock of clinic health supplies.
  • Monitor and maintain health services equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Certification, and Licensure Requirements:
  • Diploma in Practical Nursing from an accredited LPN program or Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited college or university nursing program.
  • At least three (3) years of nursing experience - pediatric or school nursing experience preferred.
  • Valid Indiana License.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state nursing laws, rules, and practices including school nursing.
