Position Overview

This role is situated within the Medical Examiner's Office of Cobb County Government.

The chosen candidate will be required to maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate the operational needs, which may involve evenings, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, this position mandates availability for on-call duties, including responding to inquiries from home.

Key Responsibilities

1. Efficiently plans, allocates, and oversees time, personnel, equipment, and resources to ensure successful project execution.

2. Monitors adherence to personnel policies and procedures.

3. Conducts autopsies and performs both gross and histological examinations of surgical specimens, compiling comprehensive reports of findings.

4. Reviews data and provides direction to laboratory staff as necessary.

5. Engages in forensic pathology tasks.

6. Investigates body structures and internal organs to ascertain causes of death, disease, or illness.

7. Oversees the determination and certification of causes of death, ensuring accurate record-keeping and proper handling of deceased individuals' property.

8. Ensures the integrity of the evidence chain.

9. Evaluates reports from other county agencies involved in death investigations.

10. Provides testimony in legal proceedings or hearings as required.

11. Advises health departments and governmental agencies on relevant findings related to death investigations.

12. Offers training and guidance on forensic pathology principles and investigative methods.

13. Stays updated on industry, regulatory, and legislative changes impacting the Medical Examiner's Office operations.

14. Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a Medical Doctor licensed to practice in Georgia or possess the ability to obtain such licensure; completion of an anatomic pathology residency and forensic pathology fellowship; certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology or certification in Anatomic Pathology with eligibility in Forensic Pathology. Board-eligible candidates must achieve Board certification in Forensic Pathology within two years of hire.

Licenses and Certifications

Must maintain a valid Driver's License and possess a Georgia Medical License. Certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology is required, along with certification or eligibility in Forensic Pathology.

Physical Requirements

While performing essential functions, the incumbent may frequently lift, move, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; navigate ladders, stairs, and ramps; maintain balance to prevent falls; bend and crouch; and utilize hands and arms for various tasks. Occasionally, the incumbent may need to push or pull objects exceeding 100 pounds.

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks necessitate the ability to perceive colors, odors, depth, texture, and visual signals, as well as effective oral communication.

Environmental Considerations

While performing job functions, the incumbent may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions during investigations, cold temperatures, fumes, noxious odors, and potential biological, chemical, and radiological hazards. Work hours may include irregular schedules, on-call duties, and shifts.
