Overview:

The skilled Nurse, operating within a similar healthcare environment, functions autonomously and exhibits a comprehensive understanding of all pertinent elements of a scenario.

Provides both routine and intricate care, with the capability to focus on long-term objectives or strategies. Continues to enhance the ability to manage and navigate the complexities of clinical nursing. Appropriately assigns tasks and delegates responsibilities to other healthcare providers to effectively manage the clinical situation.

The CHRISTUS Spohn South Labor and Delivery, Antepartum, and Obstetrical Emergency Departments are all supported by a cohesive team of professionals trained across all three areas.

Our dedicated team consists of Registered Nurses, OB Surgical Technicians, Certified Nurse Aides, and Unit Secretaries.

Additionally, we offer 24-hour CRNA coverage for maternity anesthesia, and our OBED is staffed with in-house OB Hospitalists to accept transfers, care for patients, and manage emergencies around the clock.

We handle approximately 220 deliveries each month.

Our capabilities include providing care for patients requiring Non-stress tests, Amniocentesis, Induction of Labor, and Management of Postpartum complications such as hemorrhage or elevated blood pressure, with the ability to initiate an emergency section within 30 minutes of decision time, recognized as a Texas Ten Step for Breastfeeding.

Our department fosters a positive atmosphere for patients and families, ensuring an exceptional patient experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meets the expectations of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • In alignment with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, delivers nursing care utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.
  • Addresses the increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to their level of practice.
  • Administers medications and treatments per established protocols; monitors for side effects and the effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
  • Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.
  • Assesses educational needs and provides instruction to patients, family members, and/or caregivers; identifies issues and resources.

Core Competencies:
  • Utilizes the Nursing Process effectively.
  • Employs critical thinking skills to evaluate the basic physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of patients and families.
  • Communicates findings to relevant healthcare team members.
  • Develops and implements a specific plan of care, modifying it to meet individual patient needs based on evidence-based practices.
  • Implements patient care and therapeutic procedures; monitors and documents the progression of treatment and educational goals.
  • Evaluates the care and treatments provided to patients and their responses.
  • Conducts timely reassessments and documentation.
  • Must perform unit-specific competencies based on the designated patient population's needs.

Qualifications:
Experience:
1 year of experience in the relevant nursing specialty is preferred.
Perinatal RN Residency or recent practice in a Perinatal Setting is preferred.

Education:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is preferred.
All newly hired experienced RNs must complete New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of employment.

New hires will be precepted by a designated trained staff member, and initial onboarding requirements will be validated through successful completion of the designated organizational entry competency validation and a Perinatal Department-specific competency validation.

Completion of all annual competency verification requirements is mandatory.

Licenses/Certifications:

RN License in the state of employment or compact is required.
BLS certification is required.
Current certification from NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or one of the following AWHONN courses: Intermediate FHM, Intermediate FHM Instructor, Advanced FHM Instructor, or Instructor Trainer at the time of hire for experienced nurses; within 90 days of hire for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty, then required to maintain course certification thereafter.

Current ACLS certification within 30 days of hire for experienced nurses; within 90 days of hire for new graduates, then required to maintain certification thereafter.

Current NRP certification at the time of hire for experienced nurses; within 60 days for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty, then required to maintain certification thereafter.
