Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deputy Sheriff to join our team at Roanoke County, VA. As a Deputy Sheriff, you will be responsible for maintaining the security and safety of the courthouse complex, as well as providing care and custody of inmates at the County Jail.

Key Responsibilities
  • Security and Safety: Maintain the security and safety of the courthouse complex, including processing entrants through security checkpoints, conducting security checks, and providing escort and supervision of inmates.
  • Care and Custody of Inmates: Provide care and custody of inmates at the County Jail, including processing inmates into custody, conducting security checks, and reviewing incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Transportation and Supervision: Transport inmates as required and supervise cleaning details for assigned areas.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain logs of inmate movement and other relevant records.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Some experience in public and personal contact work, preferably related to law enforcement activities.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of civil and criminal law, court procedures, and rules, regulations, and procedures of the County Jail; ability to cope with and handle interpersonal relationships; follow oral and written instructions; and to prepare records and reports.
Additional Requirements
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Age: Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Background Check: Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results.
