General Overview
As a vital member of the law enforcement community, this role involves performing protective service duties that include enforcing regulations, patrolling designated areas, investigating criminal activities, serving legal documents, and ensuring public safety. Responsibilities also encompass testifying in judicial proceedings, maintaining accurate records, and preparing detailed reports. The position operates under the moderate supervision of a designated shift supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas in a marked vehicle to monitor for traffic violations, suspicious activities, and disturbances; respond to dispatch calls and public complaints.
- Execute warrants, summons, and civil process papers, making arrests when necessary, utilizing appropriate restraints.
- Enforce traffic regulations, issue citations for violations, and conduct traffic control and assistance.
- Conduct security assessments of residential and commercial properties within the patrol area.
- Collaborate with fellow law enforcement personnel and agencies on various assignments.
- Utilize computer systems to perform background checks and access criminal records.
- Support criminal investigations by gathering and presenting evidence, interviewing involved parties, and providing testimony in court.
- Maintain and organize a variety of records and documentation, preparing necessary reports.
- Ensure operational readiness of vehicles and equipment.
- Engage in special assignments such as court security or school resource duties as qualified.
- Assist with additional responsibilities as assigned.
Applicants should possess a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement techniques, procedures, and local geography. The ability to follow both verbal and written instructions, prepare clear reports, and interact courteously yet assertively with the public is essential. Candidates must demonstrate analytical skills to assess situations and respond effectively while considering surrounding hazards. Physical fitness, proficiency in the use of firearms and defensive tools, and the ability to foster positive working relationships are crucial.
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with Basic Law Enforcement Training certification. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications established by the department and the State of North Carolina. A valid driver's license in North Carolina is mandatory.
Physical Demands
This position requires frequent physical exertion, including lifting up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. The role involves various physical activities such as speaking, hearing, reaching, sitting, and repetitive motions. Close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are necessary for the job. Exposure to outdoor conditions and various hazards may occur, and specialized personal protective equipment may be required.
