Job Title: Special Education Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Special Education Nurse to join our team at Wayne County Schools Employment Network. As a Special Education Nurse, you will play a vital role in providing medical care and support to students with special needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach and reinforce safe and effective mobilization, transfers, and dressing techniques.
  • Teach bladder and bowel management.
  • Teach and perform intermittent catheterization and ostomy care (colostomy, ileostomy, ureterostomy).
  • Teach and demonstrate prevention and treatment of pressure sores.
  • Reinforce adaptations, treatments, and therapies in a student's academic program and activities in daily living.
  • Teach self-care techniques, proper body mechanics, and safe range of motion (ROM).
  • Teach safe and effective use of assistive mobilization devices (crutches, walkers, etc) and life-support machines (apnea and cardiac monitors, ventilators).
  • Perform/teach safe use and administration of medication and its side effects.
  • Teach/support in-service on CPR, First Aid, and Universal Health care to staff.
  • Write and monitor health care plans for special education students. Document all medical procedures.
  • Assist in the initial screening of special education referrals which may include screening referred students, obtaining medical documentation, interpreting medical diagnoses, translating medical information into understandable terminology, assessing a student's needs in regards to possible supportive services, consulting with other medical personnel.
  • Participate in Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings and Individual Educational Planning Team (IEPT) meetings. Provide students, families, and staff with additional resources, information, and alternatives.
  • Assist school personnel with health and medical emergencies in the school setting.
  • Teach and perform oral/nasal suctioning and deep suctioning tracheostomy care.
  • Teach and supervise appropriate staff in the process of oral or gastronomy feedings.
  • Teach/administer medication via gastronomy tube and perform general care of the g-tube.
  • May assist with the supervision of medically fragile children while in transit to and from school.
  • Interpret the results of medical findings regarding diagnosis, medication, and health status of students to the parents and school personnel.
  • Teach/administer medication via nebulizer or inhaler.
  • Perform any medical treatments per the orders of the student's physician.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the Special Education Coordinator and the Director of Special Education.
Requirements:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree/preferably a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Two years of Public Health/Pediatric Community Health experience or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Registered Nurse License.
  • Qualified Instructor for CPR or willing to complete training at the Instructor's level.
